In the past, lapwings were widespread. Especially in wet meadows, where there was enough food. But due to the draining of wet meadows, lapwing populations have declined massively.
Lapwings prefer areas with short vegetation without denser woody structures. The lapwing does not like visual barriers. The lapwing is at home in bogs and wet meadows. Today, the lapwing breeds mainly in fields and meadows.
Lapwings also hibernate in Germany in mild weather conditions.
