  ... is a well-known bird from the folk song 'The Bird Wedding': "The hoopoe, the hoopoe, he brings the bride a flower pot". Probably widespread in the past, the population in Central Europe has declined to a few thousand birds. In Germany, 800 to 950 pairs breed, in Bavaria only about 12.   The hoopoe prefers open landscapes with a warm-dry microclimate and short vegetation. In the summer months, the heat-loving bird can be observed in orchards or vineyards. The hoopoe spends most of the year in Africa. He starts his journey there in mid-July until he returns to Central Europe at the end of April.
  The bird, which is just under 30 cm tall, is slightly smaller than a magpie with a wingspan of 45 cm. Its long, thin, curved beak and distinctive feather crest are striking. When excited, the bird sets it up like a comb. It is one of the brightly patterned native breeding birds. The body plumage of the short-legged bird is bright orange-brownish, wings and tail are banded in contrast to black and white. Young birds drive away enemies at the nest with a foul-smelling secretion. That's where the phrase "You stink like a hoopoe" comes from.
  The hoopoe's diet includes large insects such as mole crickets, various beetles and grubs, as well as larger butterfly caterpillars. Occasionally, the hoopoe also eats small vertebrates, such as lizards. It hunts its prey on the ground on sparsely vegetated areas with a high variety of structures.
